Coach Pete has some words of wisdom on how to do a performance review on a sibling.
Many family business insist that they conduct performance reviews, just not on family members. It is important that in any business, every team player is given a performance review, even though it may be difficult. When it comes down to it, even if they are family members, they are still employees.
Admittedly, it can be awkward and difficult to give a performance review to a family member. Coach Pete gives three steps to help with this process. The first is to review the job description for the employee you are reviewing. If you don’t have a written description, make one prior to the review. Secondly, perform the review and have the recipient create 2-3 goals based on the review, and lastly, thank the recipient of the review for participating.
If you are being a good leader throughout the year and giving consistent, ongoing feedback, there should really be nothing that comes up in a performance review that comes as a surprise.
As always, feel free to reach out to Coach Pete with any questions, and get out there and play to your potential!
