5 Wishes Every Mom Has For Her Family Business

MomMom’s Wishes are Pretty Simple and Straightforward

I’ve had the opportunity to get to know and work with many great moms who are the principal characters in some great family business stories. I’ve found they all have a pretty similar and simple wish list. Here’s Mom’s list:

1. For Everybody in the Family to Get Along

There’s nothing Mom hates more than to see her children or in-laws bickering because of the family business. Mom just wants everybody to get along, come to the family events and genuinely interact with each other. She wants the cousins to get to know each other and be close.

2. For Everyone in the Family to Find Their Passion

Mom wants everybody to find something they are passionate about in life. It makes her sad to see some of the kids in the family business who aren’t passionate about it. If she had her druthers she’d love to see them muster up the courage to go find something they’d love to do  or conversely, she’d love to see them get creative, apply themselves and discover a way to find passion in the family business.

3. She Wants Everyone to be Successful

Mom’s your greatest cheerleader. Whatever industry you’re in she wants you to be one of the best in it and enjoy a successful life of both financial reward and personal satisfaction. Anything less leaves her with a heavy heart.

4. She Wants Everyone to Acknowledge Her and Dad’s Hard Work and Sacrifice

She worries at times that the Next Generation takes for granted the opportunity and good life they’ve been afforded due to the parents hard work and sacrifice. She wants them to stay focused on hard work as an important value to achieve success and happiness.

5. She Wants Someone to Carry on the Torch and be the Next Leader in the Family

Mom’s usually very proud of what the family business represents to the family and the community. Deep down she’d love to see someone emerge as the next leader or have a cohesive team of leaders carry it forward.

Moms do a lot for us. My mother was just over the other day giving me advice about a new product we’re launching. She’s been giving me guidance since the day I arrived.

What I want for all the moms and for all of our families is for us to work hard and stay focused on helping Mom keep her dream which will, in turn, be us achieving our dream!

Speaking of moms, here’s a short video with one of the moms that I’ve had the pleasure of coaching. Click here.
