Deliberate Practice of the Week – Why you need to go back to school like your kids do each fall

Deliberate Practice of the Week - Why you need to go back to school like your kids do each fall Top business professionals are continually looking for ways to improve their skills and business performance. Some family business families seem to want to rest on their reputation and past performance. Resting on reputation and history will most likely lead to the slow extinction of your business.

This week think about a new class you might want to take to either

  • Develop a new skill in the areas of technology or communication
  • Work on an old skill that could use a tune up
  • Work on a skill you’ve always said you need work on

So many people get set in their ways and lose their interest in learning. As a family business owner or participant it’s important for the family to model a willingness and desire for learning and development. Most companies are a reflection of their leaders. Be a leader who leads the way on staying current.

In today’s highly competitive business world survival will depend on your ability to stay current with new skills and ideas. Learning new material is like taking your brain out for a hike. Your brain, like any muscle, could use to be stretched and developed.

Continuing to do the same old thing professionally uses the same parts of your brain you use every day. Show your team that you actually can teach an old dog a new trick. If you are a younger dog challenge yourself the same way any great leader challenges his/her team.

Many of my clients will tell me they never were a big fan of formal school. I’m not telling you to go enroll in college, but I am telling you to find a new teacher and a new subject.

Whatever skill you decide to work on; take action this week. There is so much great education available today online and in most communities. One of my new favorites is a channel on YouTube called Big Think Mentor  that features many world renowned teachers at the convenience of your desktop!

Look around, open your eyes, and keep learning! Write and tell me what you committed to do so I can help hold you accountable! You can do this!
