Coaching Drill: Annual Self-Reflection

The best performers know the importance of regular self-reflection and self-evaluation. Strong family coaches and leaders inspire this behavior in their team.

Start this year by sending a note to your team/family

It could sound something like this… (feel free to cut and paste this into your own email).

TO: Team

FROM: President/Mom/Dad/Leader

RE: Annual Self-Reflection and Evaluation

Happy New Year!

Because we want to continue to evolve in our success as a family and business, I want to ask each of us to set aside 30 minutes for some important self-reflection.

It is important that we keep getting stronger and more effective in this ever-changing, competitive world we live in. Championship teams start every year anew. We are fortunate to have a successful business and we should never take our success for granted.

Great performers know the importance of being honest with themselves and they look for opportunities to stretch out of their comfort zone. Let’s push ourselves with this exercise. Please remove yourself from the distractions of your phone, email, etc., and answer the following questions.

Please answer these questions using the following scale:

5 = Always; 4 = Very often; 3 = Sometimes; 2 = Rarely; 1 = Never

  • I feel I was focused and productive in my role in the business.
  • I set a good example for everyone bringing good energy and positivity to the team.
  • I was supportive of others and a good teammate.
  • I brought new ideas of ways to improve our performance.
  • I was reliable, on time, and trustworthy with my commitments to others.
  • What are 1-2 areas you would like to improve upon in this next year?
  • What are 1-2 specific goals results you would like to accomplish next year?
  • What are 1-2 specific goals you would like to see the business or family accomplish this next year?
  • Is there anything else you would like to communicate to the business or family leaders at this time?
  • What do you see as your most significant results/accomplishments/ improvements this last year? Professionally, personally?

Thank you for making the time to be reflective and looking for ways to improve yourself and our family and business. I will invite us all to share our reflections with one another at an upcoming meeting.

Your dedication to this process will help us have an even stronger, more sustainable family and business.

Coach’s Note: Don’t be shy about challenging your team! Great teams always have a few strong leaders who set the tone and pace for others.
