If you’re anything like me the holiday season can be a bit stressful as you try to think of meaningful gifts to give people in your life.
This year I put together a list of seven gifts that I think have a chance to really have a positive impact on your recipients.
BE PRESENT during holiday gatherings. Turn off your handheld device, look away from the TV and practice really being present with your family and friends. Distraction seems to be an epidemic of late. Clear your mind, be in the moment and be present.
GENEROUSLY LISTEN to what others have to say. Listen as if what they had to say was going to make a huge difference in your life. How often do you speak and have a sense the other person is going through the motions yet not really listening? Listen for not only what’s being said, but what’s not being said and watch the body language.
ACCEPT WITHOUT JUDGEMENT. So many of our friends and family have different values, lifestyles and political affiliations. Learn to accept that and not judge. When you can give that to others it will oftentimes be returned to you. This gift will make the world a better, more peaceful place.
OFFER SUPPORT. Ask how you can help. Lend a hand, offer to make an introduction for someone or simply stay in touch with words of encouragement now and then. Everyone can use a little more support in their life’s journey.
EXPRESS LOVE, GRATITUDE or APPRECIATION. I know it can feel a little awkward, but tell your family and friends how much you love them or appreciate them. If you’re not sure you do, learn to love and appreciate others and love and appreciate yourself with all your faults and warts.
GIVE A HUG. My friend Barb reminded me how much people who live alone or are elderly can benefit from some physical touch. Give people a big hug and hold it for a minute – it will be good for both of you.
WISH THEM SUCCESS AND HAPPINESS for next year. At the end of the day isn’t that all we should want for anyone. Genuinely express your desire for them to have a great 2018. What you put out you’ll get back!
Go into this holiday season now knowing you have seven gifts in your hip pocket you can give to anyone you come across.
Thank you for giving me the gift of your attention. I appreciate you and wish you all the best for 2018!
