Our methodology at the Family Business Performance Center is centered around the concept of deliberate practice – bringing your team together and rehearsing! That’s how great performers, athletes, and musicians get better – they keep practicing! So, here are three easy ways to enhance your performance as a family business team.
#1 Find out where you are: Ask everybody to sit down in a room and hold a weekly or monthly meeting. It’s not that hard. Go around the room and ask everyone, “On a scale of 1 to 10 – how are you doing personally and professionally?” Just listen, don’t try to fix anything. Have everyone declare how they are doing. It’s a crucial starting point as a group.
#2 Set a few goals for your group: While you probably set goals in your business, it’s important to set goals as a team, specifically as a family business team. Identify one-to-three things you want to improve, such as listening, communication, or practicing. Set these goals as a team, and then individually, have everyone set a few personal goals for self-improvement this year. You need to keep growing and developing for an exceptional family business experience.
#3 Read a book: Pick a book from your shelf, study it, and come back to discuss it. Whether it’s Coach Wooden’s Pyramid of Success, In Search of Excellence, Coach to Win or the Family Business Playbook – any of these books can provide valuable insights. A book study, regardless of the choice, will help your team fine-tune thinking, gain alignment, and foster a learning culture.
Life’s too short to be struggling in a family business. Make this year a great one for your family business, and let me know if I can help in any way. Play to your potential!
